Chapter 6 Key issue 4 – Why do territorial conflicts arise among religious groups?

1. Why would the Chinese Communists feel it important to dismantle the religious institutions of a poor remote country?

2. Why did the Taliban destroy priceless artistic works from Afganistan’s ancient past?

3. What is the difference in elevation between Hebron (the largest city in the West Bank) and Tel Aviv ( the largest city in Israel)? Refer to Figure 6-56 on pg 223 of Rubinstein readings.

4. Why is the Western Wall important in Judaism, and why is the Dome of the Rock important in Islam?

  1. 1. Because the prescencs of strong religious feelings among the Tibet people conflicted with the aims of the chinese government.
    2. Because they were seen as “graven images” which were being worshipped which was in violation of Islam
    3. Tel Aviv is on built up land meaning that it is naturally below sea level and needed man’s help to get it above sea level while Hebron is among the highest places in Israel and is also on some built up land. They are opposites elevation wise.
    4. The Western Wall’s holiness in Judaism is a result of its proximity to the Temple Mount. Because of the Temple Mount entry restrictions, the Wall is the holiest place where Jews are permitted to pray, though the holiest site in the Jewish faith lies behind it.
The Dome of the Rock is built on top of the Foundation Stone, which is sacred to both Jews and Muslims. According to Jewish tradition, the stone is the “navel of the Earth”—the place where creation began, and the site where Abraham was poised to sacrifice Isaac.

  9. 1. The Chinese Communists feel it important to dismantle the religious institutions of a poor remote country because they don’t want to change, and the religions of some remote countries clash with the Chinese government.
2.The Taliban destroy priceless artistic work from Afganistan’s ancient past because they were seen as “graven images” which were being worshipped which were in violation of Islam
    3. The Hebron is the highest place in Israel and is also on some built-up land. Tel Aviv is a built-up area, they are opposites elevation wise.
    4. The Dome of the Rock important in Islam because Muslims believe that the large rock, built in the building’s dome is the place from which Muhammad ascended to the heavens, as well as the altar on which Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac or his son Ishmael. The Western Wall’s holiness in Judaism is a result of its proximity to the Temple Mount. 10. 1.Different religions will have different beliefs, the Chinese Communists hopes that everyone will listen to them. Some of them do not want to change their current lifestyle. Because the strong religious beliefs of the Tibetan people run counter to the purpose of the Chinese government.

2.The Taliban destroyed priceless works of art in the ancient history of Afghanistan because they were regarded as “graven images” and were being worshipped, violating Islamic teachings.

3.Hebron is the highest place in Israel, and it is also some of the places off the beaten track. Tel Aviv is a densely built area, and they are on the opposite side of the altitude. There is about a thousand feet elevation difference between the two cities. Tel Aviv is at sea level.

  11. 1.Because each religion has its own gods or customs, which is a very difficult thing to unify. With the development of science and technology, people are not particularly religious because many things can be explained by history, geography and technology. But in the poor and backward places, there is no condition to prove these views, so that people do not believe many facts. Some magical phenomena that can be solved by modern technology conflict with these customs or gods, so the government thinks it is important to dismantle religious institutions in a poor and remote country.
2.The Taliban destroyed precious ancient Afghan art because it was not the Christian God Jesus.
    3. Hebron is a city in the West Bank (southern Palestine), with 166000 Palestinian and 700-800 Jewish settlers, with an altitude of 930 meters, while Tel Aviv is located on a plain with flat terrain and no obvious topographic relief. Therefore, the most prominent geographical features here are the Mediterranean coastline and the cliffs at the mouth of Yakong.
    4. The west wall is the most important holy land of Judaism. Located on the side of Mount Moriah in the old city of Jerusalem, it is a section of the enclosure wall of the second temple and the only remains of the temple in Jerusalem. The temple of Jerusalem is the symbol of Ancient Judaism and the central place of all sacrifice and pilgrimage. The dome is very important in Islam, because in the perception of Islamists, the circle is the symbol for the king, and the god they believe in is also the king. Therefore, they chose such a round building, implying that the building is a symbol of divine power and will be protected by God.
